Almost a year ago, Sophie introduced me to the UK TV show Spaced and demanded that I start watching it. Since Simon Pegg is one of the stars of Spaced and I love all of Simon’s other work (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Run Fatboy Run, to name a few) I figured that at the very least, this show would be enjoyable. Plus, it’s a British comedy, and what’s not to love about British humor, especially when it’s at its best?

The premise of the show revolves around a gang of largely unemployed twentysomethings living in London. Tim (Simon Pegg) and Daisy (Jessica Hynes) rent a flat under the premise of being a couple, for the lease states that the flat can only be rented to a professional couple. They meet Marsha (Julia Deakin), their alcoholic landlady, as well as Brian (Mark Heap), the troubled painter from downstairs. Together with Mike (Nick Frost), Tim’s war fanatic best friend, Twist (Katy Carmichael), Daisy’s fashion designer best friend, and Colin, Daisy’s dog, the group have wild and crazy adventures that are totally hilarious and completely fantastic. It’s a brilliant show, and for once, I’m glad I listened to Sophie’s advice! :P

It’s witty and sharp, and it’s full of pop culture references as well as hilarious jokes. In the many times I have rewatched the show I’ve caught new references, new jokes, and the humor within the show never gets old. The characters are brilliant and well-rounded, and Spaced is simply comedy at its best. At only two seasons with seven half-hour episodes per season, Spaced was short-lived by American TV standards, but in a way, that adds to the show’s charm – if there had been any more seasons, then Spaced would have petered out and it wouldn’t be seen as amazing as it is today.

I highly recommend this show, and if anyone is interested in trying it out, I believe Surf the Channel has all of the episodes. You can stream the episodes off Surf the Channel, so no downloading required ;)
