Places I Want to Visit

February 6th, 2009 | Categories: Travel | 9 Comments

I grew up in various places throughout the world, and I have been traveling for as long as I can remember. I’ve been incredibly lucky to be able to visit so many places, but there is so much of the world that I still want to see. There’s so much every country in the world has to offer both culturally and historically, and I love exploring new places. Here are some of the places I would love to go to, in no particular order:

  • Peru
While I would also like to visit Argentina and Chile, Peru tops the list of South American countries I want to visit the most. I particularly want to visit Machu Picchu, the “Lost City of the Incas.” In my tenth grade English literature class, we read The Royal Hunt of the Sun by Peter Shaffer, which was about the defeat of the Incan empire at the hands of Spanish conquistadors. That sparked my initial nterest in Machu Picchu, and I would love to be able to visit the rest of Peru as well, as I hear it’s beautiful.
  • Russia
Ah, Russia. I have always had an interest in Russia, whether it be wishing I was fluent in Russian or having strange, time-traveling dreams where I end up in communist USSR1. I love the rich history of Russia, particularly with the last Romanovs. I did a huge report on Anastasia Romanov, the last Grand Duchess of Russia, when I was in ninth grade, and the story of Anastasia as well as the rest of her immediate family is fascinating, yet incredibly tragic. Also, I’ve always wanted to visit St. Basil’s Cathedral, it’s so iconic!
  • Antarctica
Even though I am really not one for cold weather, I think Antarctica would be a brilliant place to visit. Some of my friends have gone on trips/tours you can sign up with to go to Antarctica, and they’ve all come back with stories about amazing experiences and spectacular photos. I would love to be able to see some of Antarctic wildlife, such as penguins and orcas!
  • Egpyt
Pyramids! The Sphinx! Mummies! Egypt seems fascinating, and there’s so much stuff to do and see there. Two of my friends went there for winter break recently, and they both loved it. I’ve heard nothing but good things from those that have visited Egypt, and I think it would be a really neat place to visit.
  • Norway
Roald Dahl is one of my favorite authors, and his books Boy and Going Solo were books that I read and reread countless times. I love the way he described Norway, and I’ve always thought it was the most amazing place. My grandmother was Norwegian and I have distant relatives there, so part of why I would like to go to Norway so much is for personal reasons. I have been to all the other places of my heritage except for Norway, and so Norway is a country I really want to visit. I’d particularly like to see visit the cities Oslo and Bergen.
  1. It’s the only time-traveling dream I’ve ever had. My friends and I were visiting the USSR for some reason, and they were all allowed in the country as they were Australian citizens but I was detained and interrogated because of my US citizenship []

Ooh, I love reading about people’s travel wishes! I share your desire to see Russia one day. I think it would be lovely to take the Trans-Siberian Railway across the vast emptiness of Russia into China. I hope one day I can make that a reality. :)

Russia is great, Saint P. and Moscow are awesome, awesome cities!
I’ve always loved the Romanovs’ story – it’s so fascinating, and visiting the places where they lived was amazing.

I have no specific places I want to visit. I’d be happy to see anything new, really. Or I just don’t know enough about places to dream of seeing them :P

Ohh, those cities you described seem so fascinating. I’ve heard great things about Norway so hopefully I will be able to visit that soon myself. Are there places that you’ve been to that you recommend to others?

Visiting any of these places would be so great! For my list, I would also add Japan, New Zealand, Germany and Ireland.

My brother might get an internship for a year in Ireland, so visiting him would be a perfect excuse to go there. Oh, and he is going to be a travel guide – the next great excuse! Could it get any better? (Oh yes, if the company he’s going to work at would offer me a free trip. Not going to happen.)

I’ve only been to countries of Europe, since we have always gone somewhere “near”. Although I’m thankful that I could see so many great places, it would be lovely if I would have a chance to go a) on my own, b) somewhere further.

I’ll join you in Antactica! We’ll go sledging! I’ve never really thought about where I’d like to go. Maybe I should sometime. But I kind of want to go everywhere!

Aaah, I really want to travel as well. Though my travel list pretty much centers around Western Europe, I heavily agree with you on Antarctica and Egypt. ^_^ They’re just such different worlds, it would be amazing to visit! :D
