Kiss and Tell

March 22nd, 2009 by Manda | 3 Comments | Filed in Question of the Week, Relationships

I like to keep details of my romantic liaisons private. I dislike sharing the finer details about what goes on behind closed doors when I am with someone I have romantic inclinations towards, and I don’t have any particular interest in hearing about what goes on closed doors for other people either. It’s not something that I feel should be shared, generally speaking. I might tell some of my closest friends a few things, but even then I will not share all the details. Even people with cotton wool between their ears can figure out what happens behind closed doors, so it’s not like it’s incredibly difficult to pick and choose what parts to share when it comes to discussing private details of my romantic life.

I don’t kiss and tell, and I really dislike the entire concept of kissing and telling. It’s not an attractive trait, nor is it one that will gain you respect from others. It’s simply another form of gossip, but in some ways the damage done by kissing and telling is far worse than the standard friendship/drama gossip. Kissing and telling is really unbecoming, and it’s essentially sharing private information that is not wholly yours to share, as it involves a second party as well. No matter how enjoyable or miserable the interaction was with someone, I don’t tell analyze with others over what happened. The farthest I’ll go is say that it happened, and move on from the subject.

Question of the Week: What do you think about the concept of kissing and telling? Do you kiss and tell?

Milk (2008)

“His life changed history. His courage changed lives.”

Milk

Milk

In 1972, Harvey Milk moves from New York City to San Francisco and becomes a gay activist in the Castro district of San Francisco. As Milk becomes a prominent gay rights activist, his platform gradually turns to political activism as Milk realizes that he can be a more powerful and effective voice for the gay community as a politician, and rallies the San Francisco gay community. Despite several setbacks, Milk becomes the first openly gay man in the United States to be elected to political office in 1977, as a supervisor for San Francisco. The movie chronicles Milk’s journey as an activist, and how his struggles with a national anti-gay Save the Children movement, as well as issues he encounters with a conservative fellow politician, Dan White.

I knew little about the story of Harvey Milk besides the fact that he was the first openly gay man elected to political office, and that he resided in San Francisco. As Sean Penn had won the Best Actor Oscar for his role as Harvey Milk, I expected an excellent performance, and I knew James Franco also had an important role, which made me incredibly happy as I’m a James Franco fan. I left the theater at the end of the movie with plenty of food for thought. Milk is a very good movie, and it definitely gets you thinking about how things have and haven’t changed in terms of gay rights since Milk was in office.

The rest of this post is my opinion about the movie and contains spoilers.

Airport Do’s and Don’ts

March 20th, 2009 by Manda | 4 Comments | Filed in Travel

I learned a few airport lessons as I was flying home for spring break. It was a little surprising and unsettling, seeing as I am no stranger to airports, but these lessons were memorable all the same.

  • Do not go through security at the wrong terminal at the departing airport
I had bought my return ticket home with a different airline than the one I usually used, so I found myself almost going through security at the wrong terminal at my departing airport. The airport did offer a bus between terminals, but luckily I caught my mistake in time and ran across the airport to the correct terminal where my departure gate was.
  • Do pay attention to what the departure gate is
I was listening to my iPod as I waited at my departure gate, and luckily I looked up at the big departure gate screen and saw that my departing gate had been changed at the last minute. I had missed the announcement over the loudspeaker since I was listening to my iPod, but I managed to board the flight all the same.
  • Do not have dreams that you boarded the wrong flight
I was exhausted and decided to take a nap during the relatively short flight. I ended up having a dream that I boarded a flight to San Diego rather than Chicago. I woke up in a panic and frantically asked the woman sitting next to me, “Where is this flight going? What is our flight number?!” She thought I was going crazy, and I can’t say I blame her.
  • Do pay attention to where the arrivals exit is at the arrival airport
I was following all the arrows that pointed me in the direction of the baggage claim, but somewhere along the way I lost track of the arrows and found myself at the departure gate for a flight to London, and had to retrace my steps until I finally found the pathway to the baggage claim. As much as I love London, it was definitely not my destination for the day – I just wanted to go home!
  • Do pay attention to what baggage claim your flight was assigned
I was sleeping (or, well, fitfully dreaming) when the flight attendant announced what my flight’s baggage claim number was at my destination airport, and as I forgot to ask the person I was sitting next to what the number was (I’m not sure she would have told me, as she thought I was insane after asking her about San Diego) I had to wander aimlessly around the baggage claim area until I spotted people I recognized from my flight standing at a particular carousel. I’ve no idea why the airport doesn’t just have signs up at each baggage claim carousel saying what flight number is using the carousel, it makes life so much more difficult to have to remember and/or guess!
