Class Registration

April 21st, 2009 by Manda | 6 Comments | Filed in School

I am in the process of registering for classes for the fall 2009 semester, and my God, I’ve forgotten what a pain registering for classes can be! One of the issues that I’ve had with registration is the fact that not all of the professors for the next semester are listed on the registrar. In theory, every professor at a university should be fantastic, but that is not always the case, as you can see by visiting Rate My Professors. The professors that are listed in the registrar have gotten positive reviews according to RMP, but I am a little nervous about picking a class with an unlisted professor. What if the professor turns out to be the one professor that is awful?! A professor really makes or breaks the classroom experience, and I don’t want to be excited for a great class and then get stuck with a mediocre professor.

I’ve also been trying to work out my schedule so that I can finish each day fairly early. This semester, I finish every day at 5pm, which is awful, so I am adamant that I will finish my classes earlier in the day next semester. I’ve actually been a little bit too successful with this goal; I am looking at either having four classes on Mondays and none on Tuesdays, or three on Mondays and one Tuesday morning. I’ve been debating whether or not a complete day off is worth having four classes in a row, two of which are languages, or having one morning class on Tuesdays and having the rest of the day free. The class in question doesn’t have a professor listed, so it’s not like I can make a decision based on which seems to be the better professor; my decision will depend on whether or not I feel like I can cope physically and mentally with four classes in a row and do well in all of them!

My issues with professors and class times aside though, I hope that the schedule I put together and will hopefully be able to receive for next semester is going to be pretty kickass. I am signed up for classes for both my Public Communication major and Chinese and French minors, as well as some classes I need to take regardless of my major to fulfill my General Education requirement. I’m taking a full course load as well as keeping my current part-time job and hopefully getting either another part-time job or an internship, so I am going to be incredibly busy – but I’ll be busy doing things that interest me, so hopefully it’ll all pay off in the end!

Etsy

April 20th, 2009 by Manda | 3 Comments | Filed in Online

I first discovered Etsy after Sophie introduced it to me. Etsy is an online marketplace for buying and selling all things that are handmade; a crafter’s Amazon or eBay, if you will. It’s a fantastic place, and I love seeing all of the amazing things people make. I love doing things like knitting and cross stitching, and every time I surf Etsy I either get really inspired to make something or find loads of things I want to buy!

My Etsy account is disalarming. Currently I’ve only purchased two things (a knitting pattern for cupcakes and another for donuts – they will make amazing gifts for friends and family!), but I know that I will probably end up buying many other things the more I surf Etsy! I’ve also been contemplating opening my own Etsy shop this summer. I love knitting things like scarves and hats, and as I will be making them over the summer anyway for a hobby, perhaps I could try selling some of my handmade goods on Etsy. It’s a project I would love to pursue, and if the research I do when looking into this venture proves to be positive, then it’s very possible to see my Etsy shop open this summer!

The Best Part of Breaking Up

April 19th, 2009 by Manda | 1 Comment | Filed in Question of the Week, Relationships

I have mentioned a delicate relationship situation here and there, and how the latest development was to just sit back and let it run its natural course. Well, its natural course seemed to involve everything getting derailed and ending, so once again, I am officially single1. While I wasn’t sure how receptive I would be to my newly single status, I’ve come to terms with it and have welcomed the best parts of breaking up with open arms.

Every break up is hard, and each one is different. No two break ups are the same, even if you are breaking up with the a person you have broken up with before. But even though it sucks and you feel like you’ve hit rock bottom and that the world is that much bigger, and you are that much more alone once the split has happened, not all is lost. Independence often seems to be undervalued by people that are part of codependent relationships, but I think independence is a fantastic thing. Being independent is crucial to my personal happiness; the moment I get too dependent and too reliant on someone else is when I know that things need to change dramatically or I will only end up getting myself hurt in the end.

I think the best part of breaking up is the feeling of being free. Free to do whatever I like with whomever I like whenever I like, and not having to answer to anyone, or explain myself to anyone, or having to choose between the boy and my friends. When you find the right person, all of this is easy to give up, but once you’re broken up, the freedom associated with singledom is officially yours to claim again. It’s hard at first, yes, but you get there in the end, and when you do, the feeling is fantastic. It’s also nice to be done with the teary fights, the late night arguments, the miscommunication, the confusion, and the nagging feelings of doubt and uncertainty that is generally part of the end of a relationship. I want the tears I cry to be tears for me, and not be tears over what someone else has said or done to make me upset.

Question of the Week: What are some of the best parts of breaking up?

  1. Well, not officially according to Facebook, since I have gotten married to one of my good male friends and am not listed as single, but that is neither here nor there. []
