Dreamwidth

May 4th, 2009 | Categories: Online | 13 Comments

The last two weeks or so, there has been this online buzz about Dreamwidth, which is said to be the newer, better LiveJournal. Dreamwidth is still in the beta testing stage, and it seems that a Dreamwidth invite is quite sought after in the Internet world!

Larissa was kind enough to send me a Dreamwidth invite, so I registered a Dreamwidth account to see what the fuss is all about. It seems almost identical to LiveJournal after an initial scoping out of the site and its features, but it’s still pretty cool. At the moment I have no idea what I am going to do with my Dreamwidth account, if anything, and am just name-sitting on my username. I might look into it as a form of cross-posting like I do with my personal LiveJournal, but perhaps I’ll come up with another use for it.

Anyone else have a Dreamwidth account, or know any special Dreamwidth-only features that I should know about for my account? I also have three Dreamwidth invite codes, so if anyone wants them, just leave a comment on this entry!

I’ve just registered thanks to Bren’s invite. I still don’t know what to do with my account but I’d like to see how Dreamwidth will grow considering they’re still in their open-beta stage. I’ve been an LJ user since 2004 so it’s quite hard to leave it behind even if I rarely update it these days.

My initial reaction is me, Me, ME! But I don’t really know what I would even do with the account. I have zero interest in moving back to a Livejournal sort of account given that I like my own domain, but I’d be interested to learn what you think of the service. Does the Internet REALLY need another Livejournal, is what I want to know. :)

I’ve heard about dreamwidth, but couldn’t really scope it out since I don’t have an account- I’d love an invite, if you wouldn’t mind, I’m dying to see what all the fuss is about. I wonder how successful they can be, compared to LJ and such. We’ll see, I guess :)

I haven’t really tried it long enough to check out all its features since I just signed up today. I’m just using it as a daily blog posting stuff that are either unsuitable, unimportant, too little or too random for the main blog. And with the small userbase, I manage to get grab the account name I wanted. Maybe some day it’ll become something better than LJ. ;)

I’ve read “Dreamwidth” way too much over the past week and it’s making me curious about what’s it all about. At first I imagined it was a hosting provider, because the name reminded me of Dreamhost, hehe. Would you please send me an invite? I’d like to try it out!

  6. Larissa says:

Oh, whoops, I think I forgot to add quotes or something. The list of changes is here.

And yeah, I think only time will tell how they do, but at least they’re off to a good start.

The main thing I like about it is I finally get a username I really really like. Hopefully it wont just end up being a phase like Vox was.

  8. Larissa says:

    You’re welcome ;D

Dreamwidth’s actually changed a lot of features to the system – most of which can be read here. I’ve also seen a couple of posts on what it has to offer, like, this one and this one. Hope that helps :D

Really, it’s the attitude of the staff (trying to help the userbase and listening to them) and the features they have that sold me. A lot of the other LJ clones also have staff that try to help the users, but few actually bothered to try and improve the base LJ code.

I have heard that the Dreamwidth staff is more responsive/supportive than the LiveJournal staff. However, LiveJournal is HUGE in comparison to Dreamwidth, and most companies, when starting out, are better at responding to support and such in the beginning because not only do they have to build a good reputation, but they often deal with things on a smaller scale because of its newer, smaller status. So I’m still skeptical on how that will last as Dreamwidth grows!

This definitely seems to be all the rage! I hope that if they are better than lj customer service wise that they will continue to be so even after they begin to grow considerably. I’ve had my lj account for six years now, I think when I signed up it was still in a “invite” stage of registering too. I honestly don’t know what I’d do with a dreamwidth account, but it would be nice to be on the bandwagon. ;) Would you happen to have an invite left? I would be forever grateful at a chance. :D

I got an account just yesterday and I plan on using it… I haven’t been very motivated online, though D:

I just found out about Dreamwidth yesterday, and interested in keeping a journal there. It looks pretty and would probably be my new blogging place. If you got an invite codes left, may I have one please? Thanks.
