Hair Straightener Shopping
June 21st, 2009 | Categories: Question of the Week, Style | 10 CommentsI went to my hair salon to get my hair cut last week, and after my stylist finished cutting my hair, she used this fantastic straightener to straight my hair as she was blow drying it. This was honestly the best straightener I’ve ever seen in my life. It heated up quickly, straightened my hair beautifully, gave my hair a glossy shine, and allowed my stylist to finish styling my hair swiftly and efficiently. Basically, in the few minutes it took for my stylist to turn my hair from tousled waves1 to a straight style, I fell in love with this straightener.
This magical straightener is iTech’s Wet-&-Dry Ceramic Tourmaline Flatiron. I asked my stylist how much that straightener cost, as I noticed she had a few new, unopened ones stacked in the display window. That was when I was jolted back to reality after experiencing hair straightener nirvana: this particular straightener sells for around $200USD retail!
Obviously, I can’t afford to shell out that much for a hair straightener, even if it is one that borderline has magical powers. I don’t straighten my hair every day, so I wouldn’t be getting my money’s worth for that straightener, even if it does last me for years and years. I do, however, need a new straightener as my current one is a cheap, crappy straightener that gives my hair more frizz and split ends than straight hair. I don’t know where to start looking, though2. I don’t know what good companies are for straighteners, what particular models are good, or what a ballpark price is for a straightener that’ll give me my money’s worth. So, this leads me to ask:
Question of the Week: What are some good hair straighteners you have used/would recommend? What useful knowledge do you have about companies, models, and price ranges?
- My hair, right after drying, is generally wavy, but straightens out and gets kinda poofy after I brush it out. [↩]
- I probably should have asked my stylist for some recommendations and/or cheaper models, but I was so surprised by the high price of the iTech straightener that I forgot to ask her about other straighteners! [↩]

Isn’t it so freaking upsetting when you get excited about a product only to realize it’s far beyond your reach?!
I wish I new of a good straightener for you… But I haven’t straightened my hair in over two years! When I was fourteen I straightened my hair everyday twice a day… and wound up destroying my hair. So now, I’m nonsense free. ;P
Anyhow, thank you so much for the luck!
Oooh my. I have had my straightener for about 6 months now, and I love it to death. I have the Revlon Perfect Heat straightener. Mine is 1 inch and ceramic, and I am obsessed with it. It would work well with both your wet hair and your wavy hair. :) At least, it straightened mine perfectly after I messed up some complete curls. I haven’t used it wet a lot, but the times I have, it worked well.
The best part about it is the different heat settings, but, it also heats up in less than like 30 seconds. Honestly, it has never taken more than 10 seconds for me on my setting, but I have straighter hair, so it’s a lower setting it needs to heat to. It costs $30 on Amazon, but I got mine for only $25 from Target. :)
Good luck on your fabulous straightener hunt!
I have this straightener: http://www.amazon.com/Remington-Straight-Ceramic-Straightening-Tourmaline/dp/B00067YSLO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1245615222&sr=1-1
I love it! It’s pretty inexpensive at $25, but it works really good. I love it because you can straighten/dry your hair while it’s wet all in one step.
*Looks at own straight hair* I don’t need a straightener, so I can’t help you with this one. Good luck finding one though!
My hair is more curly than wavy, and the only straighteners that work really well on it are the more expensive/salon-style ones. The one I have right now… Well, the label says “Paul Brown” and it was just under $200. When it comes to straighteners, I’ve found that you usually get what you pay for, but your hair might not need such a strong (expensive) straightener (like my hair does!).
I made a topic about this on Snark a while back; I don’t know if it’ll help you or not, but here it is: http://snarkforums.com/index.php?topic=5802.0
The only hair straightener I’ve ever used is a cheap, crappy one, but I mean, my hair’s relatively straight. Good luck finding one that works for you :)
Why not try chemical permanent straightening (well, permanent until it grows out!). It costs about $100AUD, and while expensive, it saves you bucketloads of time each day straightening your hair – and time is the most precious resource for a uni student!
I only straighten my hair sporadically, usually whenever I get bored or if I feel straight hair goes better with whatever outfit I’m wearing. I definitely don’t want it straight every day, which is why I’m not considering straightening my hair chemically.
I found a good site of ghd straighteners:http://www.ghd-shop-uk.com. Specially the IV styler. You will get pleasantly surprised here.
Features of the ghd IV styler:
1.Rounder barrel – easily create curls, waves, flicks & the perfect straight.
2.Sleep mode – heaters switch off if left unattended for 30 minutes.
3.Universal voltage – optimum performance wherever you travel.
4.Unique digital technology – improved temperature control for better styling.
5.Advanced ceramic heaters and aluminium plates – provide the ultimate surface for static-free shine.
I use a wet2straight one, and it was about $30. It works really well on my hair (which is naturally very curly, and keeps it’s curls even though I also chemically straighten it). It heats up quick, and smooths out my unruly hair in about a half hour. It leaves my hair soft and straight with little frizz.
Look for one with tourmaline, which is supposed to help keep the frizz at bay. It works great with dry hair, but wet hair takes twice as long and is a little more puffy at the end, at least on my hair.
