My Sister’s Keeper (2009)
July 4th, 2009 | Categories: Reviews | 8 CommentsTagline: My sister’s keeper.
Summary: Anna Fitzgerald (Abigail Breslin) seeks medical emancipation with the help of her lawyer Campbell Alexander (Alec Baldwin) from her parents, Sara (Cameron Diaz) and Brian (Jason Patric), whom have both relied on Anna to be a medical donor for their other daughter, Kate (Sofia Vassilieva), who has leukemia
5 Words/Phrases: Incredibly heartbreaking story; good balance of main character perspectives; good integration of flashback/present scenes; very different ending than the book; interesting dissection of how Kate’s leukemia has affected Fitzgerald family dynamics
Most Impressed By: Fantastic performances from Diaz, Breslin, and Vassilieva; how faithful the storyline of Kate and Taylor (Thomas Dekker) was to the book
Least Impressed By: How unfaithful the storyline of Jesse (Evan Ellingson) was to the book – Jesse’s character was cut down to the point where he could have been cut from the movie without any major difference to the plot
Overall Rating: 9/10

I’ve wanted to see this movie for some time but I guess I was too afraid to. Movies like this truly breaks my heart.
I’ve wanted to read the book for a very long time… hm, I’ll go see if the library has it.
I so want to see this! I haven’t read the book (and might just skim it) since I’m actually not a big fan of Jodi Picoult. I did hear about how the ending is really different though.
Agree, agree, agree. Except I’d give it 9 1/2 out of ten, because I’m a sucker. =P It would’ve been 11/10 if only they’d kept Jesse in there, but meh.
I would have given it less. :\ I give it like a 7 because of how many things were removed or how it didn’t flow right.
Jesse was my FAVORITE character and they just killed him in the movie. They also got rid of Julia Romano who I thought really meant a lot to the storyline. Her and Jesse were those extra characters that just made the book so much better.
Oh, and finally, the ending. WHY DID THEY CHANGE IT!? That made me take a whole star off because that’s what made the book so heart breaking. Stupid movie people. :|
I thought the character of Julia Romano was an unnecessary addition to the overall plot and was glad she wasn’t part of the movie. The story is about the Fitzgeralds, not Julia. I also disliked the ending of the book. Picoult spent the entire novel building up to the ending only for it to be different than what the plot had been leading up to – it felt like a cop out, like Picoult couldn’t decide what the “right” decision was so she took away all the decisions in the end.
Actually, Jodi knows the endings before she even begins writing (as she has said interviews) and has said that the ending of the book is the only ending she ever saw.
I won’t see the movie because of the complete change of the ending. I always expect the movie to be different but to change the entire ending is just an injustice to Jodi.
i love this book!
