Cooking and Cuisine

July 12th, 2009 | Categories: Food, Question of the Week | 10 Comments

I have been left in charge of the cooking for the next three weeks in my house. This isn’t a problem as I like to cook. I’ve been helping my mom out in the kitchen for as long as I can remember (although that has decreased in recent years due to laziness, I’ll admit) and took two years of cooking classes at the first high school I went to. Baking is my favorite, although I do enjoy cooking savory foods as well.

However, my recipe repertoire is somewhat limited, no small thanks to the fact that I lost all the recipes I used in my school cooking classes. I have been browsing cookbooks and scouring the internet for recipes as I’m always up for something new, but I feel like I’m always looking for the same types of recipes: tasty pastas, roast poultry, casseroles… I want to broaden my cooking horizons and try recipes that are completely out of my comfort zone! My favorite type of cuisine is Italian, but I know that there are so many other fantastic dishes out there of the non-Italian variety that I have yet to try.

Question of the Week: What are some of your favorite recipes/dishes? What are your favorite types of cuisine?

I am such a glutton, I love pretty much all foods and love trying new things! My favourite recipes are classics though- lasagna, toad in the hole, puddings, soups. I’m not so good with dishes that require careful attention to meat though- so roast birds, or schnitzel, steak- and I have never worked with fish that didn’t come out of a frozen packet before.

I love hearing about cooking, so can’t wait to hear more about your cooking exploits :)

Yaay for cooking! I eat almost everything. In a way, I guess because my mom trained me and my sister to not be too picky when it comes to food so we definitely eat whatever is on the table. I also learned from her how to cook. My mom doesn’t know how to bake though. It’s my aunt who does so I learned that from her but I haven’t done some baking in years ever since my aunt moved to New Zealand. My love for cooking definitely comes from my maternal side of the family. I mostly cook Filipino dishes especially since that’s what I grew up with but I also love cooking pasta dishes (mostly lasagna, spaghetti and carbonara). As for other cuisines, I really like Japanese then there’s Italian as well as Chinese. :)

I have a giant InDesign file waiting to be printed full of recipes from various sources I’ve typed up and am planning on making one day. I LOVE recipes. But I’m not that great a cook. XP It’s mostly Italian with a sprinkling of Asian and Vegetarian. And pretty much every recipe includes mushrooms. I ADORE mushrooms.

If you love Italian, I recommend going through epicurious.com – it’s the website for the magazine Bon Appetit, and it’s largely Italian. And AMAZING.

My very favourite recipe, though, is Hazelnut, Pesto, and Mushroom Lasagna. It’s a vegetarian meal with tooooons of bechamel, so it’s absolutely divine. http://www.epicurean.com/featured/mushroom-pesto-and-hazelnut-lasagne-recipe.html*

*similar website name, but NOT the Bon Appetit site, obviously.

I have just moved out on my own and my husband and I have started a vegetarian diet. We got a lot of awesome recipes from fatfreevegan.com!

I wish I developed a love for cooking and baking, but alas, it’s just not for me. Living on my own has proven quite a challenge for me since I HATE cooking. I’m such a lazy cooker. XD I’ve become a huge fan of stir frys because of that. They’re easy, fast and delicious. ;D My favourite is peppers, black olives, tomatoes, feta cheese and some spices. Yummy.

Like you, my favorite type of cuisine is Italian. I also love Asian food, though (especially Japanese, with Chinese a close second and then Korean and everything else). My recipe repertoire is also very, very limited, but I haven’t been able to find too many recipes that I like. :( I usually go to foodnetwork.com or epicurious.com (like someone else mentioned) or check out cookbooks from the library.

Indian and Asian! I’ll try almost anything if it is from the eastern side of the world. I think Western cuisine lacks flavour and experimentation, curry or sushi over a roast or pasta any day!

I’m actually planning on gathering lots of recipes and sticking them all this this unused a4 2008 diary I took home from work. That why I can have all my favourites and some experiments all in one place

I only cook Chinese food. :P I had to cook for three weeks too last year when my mom went back to China.

This sounds very exciting. I am fond of Italian food as well. I also like to indulge in various Asian cuisines. You should try a few Thai recipes. Their food is amazing. I’m a huge fan of Phad Se-Ew, although I’ve never tried to cook it myself. I think I will give it a try sometime though!

Desserts always make the heart grow fonder as well, if you enjoy baking. :) I hope you enjoy your cooking ventures.
