Down for Everyone or Just Me?

August 10th, 2009 by Manda | 5 Comments | Filed in Online, Technology

In light of last Thursday’s DDoS1 attacks against Twitter, LiveJournal, and Facebook (apparently Blogger was also targeted too?), the website Down for Everyone or Just Me? was very handy to use when checking whether or not these outages were experienced by everyone or if it was just my computer being iffy before news was released that the cause was a DoS attack.

Basically, Down for Everyone or Just Me? checks to see if the site is up and running and will tell you whether the site is experiencing actual downtime or if it’s just your ISP/browser/computer that can’t view the website. I’ve been using it more often than I’d like to as of late as it seems the quality of my internet connection has decreased in the last few months, but it’s much more convenient to use Down for Everyone or Just Me? rather than frantically asking those on Twitter whether or not others can see a site I can’t load in my browser!

A Year from Now

As I prepare to move into my college dorm to begin my sophomore year of college, I’ve been thinking a lot about how different things are now than they were even a year before. Not just the things around me, but also about how I’ve changed as a person, too. I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting in the last couple of days about the things that did and didn’t happen in the past year, and I’ve also turned my attentions to what I want to achieve this upcoming academic year.

A year from now, academically speaking, I’d like to have made Dean’s List for both semesters of my sophomore year1, have completed a summer language immersion program either for French or Mandarin Chinese, secured an internship for the school year, and have confirmed, or at least refined, any upcoming plans for a semester of studying abroad2.

In terms of my social and romantic life, I’d like to have the same group of friends I have now as I love them all, but I’d also like to expand my circle of friends more and meet new people more often. I’m not really the type of girl to have hundreds of okay friends; I like to have several very close friends that I know I can count on in any time of need. I am open the idea to being in a relationship with someone but I’ve never been the type of girl to go looking for a guy – most of the time, the guy finds me, with varying results. Plus, I’m not good at relationships so it’s never made sense for me to go looking for something that will inevitably end in disaster and heartbreak.

I have a good feeling about this upcoming academic year. I have a lot of good things lined up and hey, there might be even better surprises in store for me!

Question of the Week: Where do you see yourself (or where would you like to see yourself) in a year’s time?

  1. I made Dean’s List both semesters freshman year. []
  2. I’m looking at studying abroad sometime my junior year. []

Rachel Getting Married (2008)

Rachel Getting Married

Rachel Getting Married

Summary: The return of Kym (Anne Hathaway), the estranged daughter in the family, for the wedding of her sister Rachel (Rosemarie DeWitt) over the weekend upsets the family dynamics and brings to the surface long-simmering tensions each family member has

5 Words/Phrases: Stellar performance from Anne Hathaway; cleverly used the present situation to bring back mentions and memories of the tension-wrought past; believable family dynamics; each character was given depth and realistic flaws and merits; very up close and personal feel to the movie (almost documentary-esque)

Most Impressed By: Anne Hathaway’s portrayal of Kym; how elements of the family history was unveiled a little at a time throughout the movie rather than all at once; how the character of Kym could have so easily been a cliche yet was remarkably unique

Least Impressed By: The shaky camera work! Many of the shots were fully zoomed in to an actor’s face, and some were too close for my liking, resulting in a lot of the camera going from the left to right repeatedly when characters were dialoging and the camera never seemed quite steady; some scenes (like the dishwasher and the dinner scene at the end) were too long

Overall Rating: 8.5/10
