Halloween
November 1st, 2009 | Categories: Friends, Life, Question of the Week | 9 CommentsI have mixed feelings about Halloween, and I’m pretty apathetic about the “holiday” in general. I like the free candy aspect of it, but I dislike the need to come up with a witty and creative costume every year, as well as the fact that most girls use the holiday as an excuse to parade around in next to nothing in the name of wearing a “costume”.
Last year, my friend and I dressed up as Sarah and Bristol Palin and went trick-or-treating at international embassies. While that was fun and definitely something I will remember forever, embassy trick-or-treating wasn’t really something I wanted to do this year. And since I worked all during the day at my new job, by the time the evening rolled around I was exhausted and didn’t have the energy to go out anywhere.
I ended up staying in for Halloween with a friend. We watched Shaun of the Dead (my compromise on a scary movie, as I can’t watch horror films without having nightmares for weeks) and passed out candy to anyone that stopped by. It was a very nice, very low-key Halloween, and I enjoyed it a lot more than I would have if I had gone out partying instead. Some days, a night in with friends is so much nicer than going out with strangers!
Question of the Week: How did you spend Halloween this year?
Sounds like you had a good time :) I went with some friends with Salam MA to check out the shops, and festivities there. It was packed with people. After we went to a costume party, which was fun, but really late at night.
I think I just like Halloween for an excuse to decorate. XD Since I was on my own for the past 4 years, I never really had decorations, but since I was living with my parents this year, I got out ALL their decorations and went mad. It was fun. :D
As for my actual Halloween eve, I spent it watching Criminal Minds and Merlin with my mom. :)
I went trick or treating with 5 of my friends and my younger brother. I love dressing up, I love getting candy, I love seeing costumes, and I love giving candy to little kids. (I’m by far the oldest kid in my neighbourhood.) It was a pretty fun night, but I found that it wasn’t as good as other years. Not a lot of people were out, probably because of H1N1.
I LOVE Shaun of the Deah, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost together are just hilarious and amazing!
I didn’t do much for Halloween either, my friend came over and had a project to do, so we had emoticon wars on MSN… while in the same room :P It was a little sad.
We aren’t celebrating much over here, though you could buy tons of decoration at the stores over the past days. On the street a few people had carved out some pumpkins, they looked really good! Other than those general things, I stayed at home and made a nice evening with my boyfriend, watching several episodes of South Park. :)
Yeah, Halloween isn’t really my thing. I haven’t trick-or-treated since I was about 16 so never really had the need to make a costume. My husband says it’s “cosplay for the normal folk.” It craks me up, haha. I wore a simple costume to school on Friday because all the other teachers were. I also gave out some candy to my kids. It was cute. I spent actual Halloween singing at Mass, having dinner at my parent’s house, and then playing video games with Josh just like any other night.
I never really celebrate Halloween. Usually I just stay in and watch TV. It was quite good this year, the Most Haunted (program where people lock themselves in dungeons and try to ‘contact’ the spirit people who haunt the place) Halloween Special was on, so I freaked myself out by watching that. When I went to bed I swore I was seeing ghosts everywhere – my mum didn’t believe me though. =/
I ended the night by writing 1000 words for NaNoWriMo, but that’s not really Halloween-y. Might be going to a belated party on Saturday though.
I ended up on a totally non-Halloween-related girlie sleepover at a friend’s house. It was a lot of fun and we did have a lot of candy, but we always do. Hahaha.
And if you enjoyed Shaun of the Dead you have to check out Dance of the Dead. It’s pretty much the same, but it goes on at a high school prom, and it’s really funny.
Embassy trick-or-treating sounds like something I’d like to get to do sometime! This Halloween, I partied and then came back to my dorm and hung out with people, so I actually did both going out and staying in.
