Just a Minute (January 2010)

January 31st, 2010 by Manda | 6 Comments | Filed in Life

Since Every Hour on the Hour is now defunct, I thought I’d participate in the Just a Minute meme instead.

Feeling… stressed. I have a big deadline looming ahead of me for a project and I’m scrambling to get everything completed to the best of my ability before the deadline arrives.

Reading… Mother of Sorrows by Richard McCann. It’s quite good so far; McCann has an amazing way with words.

Eating… frozen yogurt. The latest trend around here is froyo, and there are so many amazing froyo places nearby that I constantly want it for dessert.

Missing… Glee. The soundtrack is all I have to tide me over till the second half of the season airs. Oh April, why must you be so far away?

Jealous… of my brother. He met Ozzy Osbourne yesterday!

Planning… my summer vacation. If everything works out the way I am hoping it will, summer 2010 will be the best summer yet.

Frustrated… with my neighbors. I am trying to be reasonable though, as I don’t want the ordeal to be a bigger deal than it should be.

Listening… to Metric. I rekindled my love for them the other day and now I’m listening to their songs all the time.

Voting… in the 2010 Bloggies. This blog was nominated in the Best Teen Weblog category which has been amazing, and I encourage everyone to vote for their favorite nominated blogs as today is the last day to vote!

Stunned… by the fact that today is the last day of January. Where did the first month of the year go?!

I Don’t Have Luck With Neighbors

January 29th, 2010 by Manda | 12 Comments | Filed in Life

When I live at home, I have to deal with my asshat neighbor, although the issues with said neighbor only really are a problem in the summer. I assumed that I’d only have neighborly troubles at home, but since the semester started three weeks ago, it looks as though a bitter dispute, at the very least, is bound to break out between my roommate and I with our neighbors1.

The root of the issue is noise. It’s a pretty common problem in dorm-style living, and usually noise issues are resolved by knocking on the door of the noisy room and asking its occupants to quiet down. And most of the time, that’s enough to take care of the situation, and it keeps the Resident Assistant (RA) out of the situation and there’s no documentation of the incident to go on anyone’s record. Except when the noise is at such a level when you can clearly hear lyric-for-lyric what song the neighbors are listening to and they speak at such a volume that you know one of the girls lost a hairpin and a boy who was hanging out in the room found it by searching under her bed, there is a problem.

My roommate and I have both asked our neighbors to be quiet on separate occasions multiple times in the past two weeks2. We have always been mindful to ask them to lower the noise level during “quiet hours”3 even though they are generally loud all the time. Last night, however, was the final straw. When we asked them to be quiet, a boy in the room yelled a slur against my roommate after she had taken barely two steps away from the room. In response, one of my neighbors started making insulting (and false) comments about my roommate and me.

This, more than anything, is what is prompting my roommate and me to take further action about this situation. It is no longer adequate to just ask them to be quiet and hope that they respect our request (for the record, they usually don’t). My roommate and I are discussing our options and will not hesitate to file a formal complaint about this situation if necessary. It’s not just about the noise anymore; it’s about the disrespect and rudeness. We have never made slurs against or insulted our neighbors, much less done anything that warrants that behavior targeted at us, and we will not tolerate it.

  1. Two new girls moved into the room next door as the old occupants moved out at the end of last semester. []
  2. It’s only been three weeks into the semester and we decided to let the noise slide during the first week back. []
  3. Quiet hours are from 11pm – 8am weekdays, 1am – 10am weekends. []

Clementines Are the Perfect Snack

January 28th, 2010 by Manda | 11 Comments | Filed in Food

My roommate and I went grocery shopping to stock up on food and drinks and among our purchases was this box of clementines. They were on sale and as my roommate and I both like them, we decided to buy the box of them as it is always good to have fruit on hand. She and I have been eating mainly junk food ever since the semester started and neither of us are comfortable with the idea of us maintaining a junk food diet. So, these clementines are our first venture into trying to become healthier.

I haven’t had clementines since like, the third grade, so I was very excited to try them again as I remember them being delicious. And delicious they are! Clementines really are the perfect snack. They’re tasty, healthy, easy to eat, and convenient to carry around if one needs a portable bite to eat. I strongly suspect my roommate and I will have devoured this entire box of clementines in about a week… they’re simply too yummy to resist!
