2010 Golden Globes Review

January 18th, 2010 | Categories: Entertainment, Reviews, Style | 17 Comments

I love awards season. The glitz, the glamour, the ritziness – they’re all things I love about awards in the entertainment industry. I’m not really one for the music awards but I do love those for movies and television, particularly the Oscars and Golden Globes. Unfortunately I never really manage to see all the movies/shows nominated for awards so I can’t really make a valid judgment on which ones I think should win; nevertheless it’s still fun to weigh in on the outfits on the red carpet and which nominees go home with an award!

The Red Carpet
I really love it when a star’s fashion choice reflects elegance, sophistication, and class. I’m not usually a fan of outfits that are a little wilder/more creative than the norm, as those usually don’t turn out very well – Lara Flynn Boyle’s attempt at impersonating a ballerina or the slashed trash bag look by Courtney Love, anyone? Still, I do appreciate a unique outfit when I see it. Obviously, this is not a complete list of every single star that made a red carpet appearance, it’s simply a list of outfits that really caught my eye.

Hits

  • Fergie
Her dress was absolutely beautiful. However, I’m not really a fan of her hair; I dislike both the shade and style.
  • Kristen Bell
Classic and elegant. I love how her necklace, shoes, and clutch add touches of sophistication to her overall look.
  • Anna Kendrick
Absolutely stunning. The dress looks fabulous and I love the clutch and earrings she has on. Her hairstyle also strengthens the sophistication of her look.
  • Nicole Kidman
Could do with one or two less bows, but this is elegant, elegant, elegant.
  • Jennifer Garner
I love how all the lines in the dress flatter her figure. This is fantastic!
  • Cory Monteith
I don’t usually bother deciding whether guys are hit or miss because a tux is a tux, but he will always be a hit in my book.
  • Sandra Bullock
I love the shade of purple and how she looks like a fairy princess. Gorgeous!
  • Dianna Agron
    This girl is flawless.
  • Emily Blunt and John Krasinski
One word: perfection. Oh, and three more: adorable beyond words.

Misses

  • Jennifer Morrison
There are ruffles upon ruffles upon ruffles and she almost looks like she’s impersonating a wedding cake.
  • Zoe Saldana
The color is fantastic on her but the ruffles and ribbons look atrocious. If the dress had a much “cleaner” look with less frilly stuff, it would have looked a lot better.
  • Christina Aguilera
Stunning from the neck up but below that it’s not flattering. The dress is very strange, particularly the bodice, and the fact that the color of the dress is quite similar to her skin tone makes her look uninteresting and washed out.
  • Heidi Klum
I absolutely love the color of the dress but I wonder if Heidi is trying to impersonate a mermaid… definitely not a fan of the style of the dress.
  • Chloe Sevigny
I really get the impression as though she’s either caught in a picture frame or is trying to channel one thanks to all the ruffles that are surrounding her frame.
  • Christina Hendricks
Orange hair, orange dress, orange-y (well, red) lips. Add some other colors and shrink the ruffles and this would look much better.
  • Lea Michele
The bodice looks beautiful but as for the rest of the dress… it’s far too big for her.

Awards
I’ve seen a decent amount of the nominated movies and have followed some of the TV series nominations for a while, so I was pretty excited for the awards portion of the evening. I’m still bitter that Jim Parsons wasn’t nominated for his role in The Big Bang Theory; I think that was a major oversight. Nevertheless, overall I was quite pleased with the winners. The full list of nominees and winners can be found here.

Highs

  • Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side) winning Best Actress (Drama)
  • Robert Downey Jr. (Sherlock Holmes) winning Best Actor (Comedy or Musical)
  • Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) winning Best Supporting Actor
  • Up winning Best Animated Feature Film
  • Glee winning Best Television Series (Comedy or Musical)

Lows

  • Avatar winning Best Feature (Drama)
  • (500) Days of Summer losing to The Hangover for Best Feature (Comedy)
  • Marion Cotillard (Nine) losing to Meryl Streep (Julie & Julia) for Best Actress (Comedy or Musical)1
  • The Princess and the Frog not tying with Up for Best Animated Feature Film2
  • Cinema Italiano (Nine) losing to The Weary Kind (Crazy Heart) for Best Original Song
  • Jane Lynch (Glee) losing to Chloe Sevigny (Big Love) for Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television

I cannot wait for the Academy Awards :D

  1. Streep probably deserved this over Cotillard but Cotillard’s performance in Nine was really what I took away from the movie. []
  2. In my ideal world, there would have been a tie for the two as I love both of them. []

I agree with your ‘Best dressed’ list, except for Anna Kendrick, I didn’t really like her dress. Oh! And I think I kinda like Zoe Saldaña’s. I didn’t at first, but I don’t know, it’s got something :)
As for the winners, if Avatar and The Hangover are the best of the year, that’s pretty lame. And I did enjoy both, mind you, I just didn’t feel like I was watching ‘the best’ comedy/drama. Oh well.
And as much as I like Glee, I don’t believe it’s the best comedy series either. I’m glad that 30 Rock didn’t win for the zillionth time, but seeing HIMYM and TBBT weren’t nominated, I would have picked Modern Family by far.
Anyways, I was pretty much rooting for Michael C. Hall and Toni Collete, so I’m happy enough ^_^

  2. Alice says:

I saw the list of who won this morning and was quite disappointed. So many better people to nominate than who were nominated. I wholly agree with your highs and lows. Inglorious Basterds deserved to win over Avatar too.

Sandra Bullock winning is an amazing high though, I love that woman.

    • Manda says:

I think everything nominated in the Best Feature category deserved to win over Avatar. Yes, Avatar has a claim over the technical/editing categories but for overall best feature? Not so much.

  3. Kaylee says:

    Yesss, Cory Monteith!! :D

As usual with awards shows, I end up disliking most of the dresses xD I did think Kristen Bell’s was very cute!

I was also disappointed by Avatar winning best feature (totally agree with your reply to Alice’s comment) and Jane Lynch losing her category.

    • Manda says:

I’m hoping that with Glee renewed for a second season, Lynch will win it next year (because there’s no doubt she’ll be just as spectacular as Sue Sylvester next season).

  4. Lady Impulse says:

Sandra Bullock and Dianna Agron were beautiful!!! I think Christina Aguilera was trying out Lady Gaga a bit, no? Haha

  5. Clem says:

I thought Heidi Klum looked really nice! But, you know, I adore her beyond belief. :P Plus, if you see the kind of clothes she usually wears, this is such a step up.

    • Manda says:

I’ve never really seen Heidi Klum around, so I don’t know how she dresses at other events :P If there was less poof in the dress, or if it didn’t narrow from the waist down before the poof, then I would’ve liked it so much more, as the color is great and the bodice looks lovely.

  6. Regina says:

I wanted Jane Lynch to win too. I’m not a big fan of Cory’s white tie with his white shirt though. :P

  7. Cecilie says:

I have no idea who Dianna Agron is, but she definitely looks the best out of them all:) Love the dress!

  8. Krissy says:

I won’t comment on any of the outfits as I pretty much disagree with you on all of them on the best dressed… XD And I like Christina Aguilera’s dress. XD I guess we have very opposite taste.

I only caught the tail end of the show (we were away for the day and only just got home from the last hour), but everything I saw disappointed me. :( The only one I was a little bit ‘yay’ about was Sandra Bullock. And I actually wanted someone else to win (I forget who), but I do like her so that was okay. I was SO disappointed by the best picture winners. Seriously? The Hangover? Mind you, I probably shouldn’t judge because I didn’t see it, but it compared to others that were nominated, it just didn’t seem like best picture material to me.

  9. Meg says:

Out of your “hits” list, Dianna Agron is the only person who I think actually looks really good, but then again, I think she’s awesome in general, so I may be biased. Fergie’s dress would look much better in a different color, imo. And I like Zoe Saldana’s dress!

Re: awards — totes (yes, I just said totes) agreed that Avatar should not have won Best Drama. I haven’t seen the other films, but Inglourious Basterds was 100000x better, especially as a drama. I love that Glee won, though!

  10. Sean says:

I don’t really like award shows, but I think The Girlfriend Experience should have won some awards, I loved that movie.

  11. Melody says:

Awards wise, I think GG is a joke. They seem to just go for whatever is the most popular (box office and ratings) so I am hoping that the Academy Awards will have very different outcomes. However, the good thing about GG is that TV stars get to be there, so we got to see the likes of Jim Parsons. :D
