53 Grams of Sugar in a Bottle

I usually get a bottle of Lipton’s Iced Green Tea with Citrus whenever I have to buy lunch on a day that I intern. However, while I was halfway through the bottle the other day at my internship, my eye fell upon the nutritional information on the back of the bottle and I almost choked on my tea.

These are the nutritional facts that Lipton outlines for the Iced Green Tea with Citrus on their website:

Serving Size: 8 fl oz
Servings per 20 fl oz container: 2.5

Amount Per Serving
Calories 80
Total Fat 0g
Sodium 70mg
Total Carbohydrate 21g
Sugars 21g
Protein 0g

If there are 21g of sugar in one serving size of 8 fl oz and one bottle is 2.5 serving sizes… that means for every bottle of Iced Green Tea with Citrus I drink, I am drinking about 53g of sugar! My God, no wonder I have been noticing a slight weight gain recently1.

I am most definitely bringing a water bottle to work now. I can always treat myself to bottled sugary drinks in the future, but I am not going to drink them regularly anymore. So long, Lipton Iced Green Tea with Citrus!

  1. Of course, I’m not saying that any possible weight gain is directly caused by Lipton iced tea. But hey, it could be a factor. []

    That would be a shocking discovery. It will probably be a good change to start drinking water instead. I don’t like water but I will drink it when I am at work because it’s easiest to bring a water bottle and just fill it up in the bathroom when I run out.

    It still amazes me to this day how much sugar is in drinks like that. It’s iced tea – it’s not supposed to have sugar!

    That. Is. Scary. I usually just bring a bottle of water to school. I love iced tea, but I know how bad it is for me. :P

    It’s crazy how much sugar there is in drinks! I actually stopped drinking just about everything except for water and milk after I realized how fattening stuff like Fruit Punch and Iced Tea really are.

    I also hate the fact that they try to fool you by sneakily adding in that the bottle is 2.5 servings. If someone weren’t to examine the whole label, they would think they were drinking 80 calories worth, when it’s really about 200.

      I HATE when they add that the bottle is 2.5 servings!! It’s like oh thanks, maybe you should make one bottle actually be one serving so we all don’t gorge ourselves on sugars/carbs/fats/etc without knowing it.

    EVERYTHING has sugar in it. It’s just terrible. My friend told me she was giving up sugar for lent, and my reaction was, “Uh, have fun not eating for 40 days?” (She clarified that she meant sweets.)

      I also hate the fact that most of the time, high fructose corn syrup is used to sweeten drinks in the U.S. I wish we used cane sugar :(

    That is shocking! And everyone always holds a preconception that Lipton Ice Tea (whatever the flavor) is healthy! I still don’t have the willpower to stop. The only way I’d stop drinking it regularly is if news broke that polythene or cocaine was in it or something.

    I think I said it in my reply to you on my post, but companies are definitely thinking in the lines of getting people addicted (and so more money for them) than helping us be healthier. Medical centres are for health, companies for making money. It’s sickening really.
