Chatroulette

Last night (or early this morning, technically), my roommate and I decided to go on Chatroulette, a “service for one-on-one text-, webcam- and microphone-based chat with people around the world.” Basically, users are paired randomly for webcam-based chats. Users have the option of disconnecting the current chat if desired by clicking “Chatroulette Next” (also known as “nexting” someone). It’s an endless stream of making random connections with strangers from all over the world in an attempt to… well, I don’t know. Make new friends, I guess?

Most of the reason why I went on Chatroulette was to see what all the fuss was about. My friends that have been on Chatroulette have a variety of opinions about the site. One friend, who had only been on the site once, saw no nudity or masturbation during her entire Chatroulette session (which, for anyone who knows anything about Chatroulette, is quite a feat). Another friend of mine Chatrouletted with Jessica Alba, and another did with the Jonas Brothers. Personally, I wouldn’t mind Chatrouletting with Ashton Kutcher!

I also felt like Chatroulette is something that everyone has to try at least once, especially if you’re in college. So, I threw caution to the wind and spent an hour on Chatroulette, typing and talking and viewing and nexting until I had seen more than enough of what Chatroulette has to offer.

Unfortunately, I did not see any celebrities. I did, however, talk to some nice boys from Canada, England, and France, but the majority of what I saw was penis after penis after penis, mixed in with plenty of masturbation. Now that I have seen enough random penises and strangers masturbating to last me a lifetime, I definitely won’t be going on Chatroulette again anytime soon!

I haven’t tried Chatroulette yet, and I don’t think I will. Penises/masturbation definitely put me off trying it. I guess it’s kind of like Omegle; you never know what kind of stranger you’re going to get. I didn’t know celebrities were using Chatroulette, though — it would be cool to get connected to one!

I’ve actually never heard of Omegle before! I only know about Chatroulette through word of mouth and because Jon Stewart featured it once on The Daily Show. I just looked up Omegle and it sounds like the same thing as Chatroulette, minus the video (except it looks like Omegle added a video feature a few weeks ago – possibly in response to Chatroulette’s popularity?).

That’s disgusting. I would never be able to do that – Omegle freaked me out enough. I suppose if you only hit decent people or celebrities, it would be a pretty interesting experience though! In theory, that’s really cool…it just sound like it would turn gross fast. Your friends were pretty lucky (the ones who talked to Jessica Alba and the JoBros – not a huge JoBro fan or anything, but pretty cool!).

I must be ancient or something because I’ve never heard of either of those sites or anything like them in my life. Even though you’ve enlightened me now, I still won’t be trying it out because it sounds creepy. XD

I don’t have any great desire to try it out. I like Omegle because you can be totally anonymous. My friends and I often to pretend to be random people on Omegle, because nobody’s seeing your face, and nobody knows who you REALLY are. Plus, I’m socially awkward and I don’t really like meeting people face-to-face. That’s why the internet is so awesome.

Also, the celebrities are fake. :P You can Google it.

I beg to differ about the celebrities! They are real (this sounds like a lame reason but my friends wouldn’t lie, you know :P) and upon Googling it I just found links that verified it. :P

It’s a shame that so many disgusting people go on Chatroulette because I think it’s a pretty great concept. It’d be nice if all the people you met on it were just regular people who wanted to have a real conversation with you.

And a lot of celebrities use Chatroulette (Paris Hilton, too I’ve heard). It would be kind of hard to make something like that when they’re sitting there having an actual conversation with you.

Yeah it’s such a strange thing and I don’t think I’m ever going to try it.

The first time my friends and I tried it, we talked to a few guys from Chile who were pretty cool, some stoners from France who were really funny, and some college students at a different college who knew people we knew from high school! Plus, we didn’t come across any penises, so I’d say that time was a success. The second (and last) time I chatrouletted with friends, though, every other person we got was masturbating or had put up a video of something inappropriate. :| It’s one of those things that’s somewhat fun once in a while in a large group of friends, but I would never try it alone!

Hope you weren’t too traumatised by Chatroulette!

I’ve never used it, and I’d probably be more inclined to use the text-only feature (like Omegle!). I don’t even like showing Internet acquaintances what I look like, let alone random strangers! Plus I’m too awkward around strangers for voice chats…
