Chatroulette

March 28th, 2010 by Manda | 13 Comments | Filed in Online

Last night (or early this morning, technically), my roommate and I decided to go on Chatroulette, a “service for one-on-one text-, webcam- and microphone-based chat with people around the world.” Basically, users are paired randomly for webcam-based chats. Users have the option of disconnecting the current chat if desired by clicking “Chatroulette Next” (also known as “nexting” someone). It’s an endless stream of making random connections with strangers from all over the world in an attempt to… well, I don’t know. Make new friends, I guess?

Most of the reason why I went on Chatroulette was to see what all the fuss was about. My friends that have been on Chatroulette have a variety of opinions about the site. One friend, who had only been on the site once, saw no nudity or masturbation during her entire Chatroulette session (which, for anyone who knows anything about Chatroulette, is quite a feat). Another friend of mine Chatrouletted with Jessica Alba, and another did with the Jonas Brothers. Personally, I wouldn’t mind Chatrouletting with Ashton Kutcher!

I also felt like Chatroulette is something that everyone has to try at least once, especially if you’re in college. So, I threw caution to the wind and spent an hour on Chatroulette, typing and talking and viewing and nexting until I had seen more than enough of what Chatroulette has to offer.

Unfortunately, I did not see any celebrities. I did, however, talk to some nice boys from Canada, England, and France, but the majority of what I saw was penis after penis after penis, mixed in with plenty of masturbation. Now that I have seen enough random penises and strangers masturbating to last me a lifetime, I definitely won’t be going on Chatroulette again anytime soon!

The Wise Words of My Mother

March 27th, 2010 by Manda | 7 Comments | Filed in Family, Friends, Relationships

When my boyfriend in high school and I broke up, I was devastated. I really wanted to work on becoming friends with the guy after we split up. Needless to say, in the first couple weeks following the breakup, he and I didn’t really cross paths all that much. I was beside myself – how could we be friends if we never saw each other anymore?

My mother told me that time apart was needed before we could be friends. She was right. Two years later, I now consider him to be one of my best friends from high school.

When one of my (now former) best friends in college betrayed me, I wanted to cut her out of my life and for everyone around me to do so as well. Obviously, that was a little irrational for me to expect of my friends to feel the same way towards her as I did. But I didn’t want to deal with her or to have her still be in my life anymore after what she did.

My mother told me that in time, the girl’s true colors would show and she would end up hurting everyone else in my group of friends, not just me. She was right. The girl crossed every line you can’t cross in a friendship and now my friends feel the same way about her that I do without me having to influence their feelings.

When my most recent ex briefly floated the idea of getting back together, I had no idea what to do. Part of me was willing to consider it as it seemed too rash to rule anything out immediately. But a bigger part of me was far more cautious as our breakup was really not one I’d like to ever repeat.

My mother told me that if he was really serious about setting things right between us, he’d win back my trust over time. She was right. Apparently he wasn’t all that serious about getting back together. Which is good, because I have no desire for him to be in my life anymore in any capacity whatsoever.

I’ve always known that my mother gives great advice, but each time I run to her for her words of wisdom I am always amazed by just how wise she is. I’m so incredibly lucky to have her in my life.

53 Grams of Sugar in a Bottle

March 26th, 2010 by Manda | 10 Comments | Filed in Food

I usually get a bottle of Lipton’s Iced Green Tea with Citrus whenever I have to buy lunch on a day that I intern. However, while I was halfway through the bottle the other day at my internship, my eye fell upon the nutritional information on the back of the bottle and I almost choked on my tea.

These are the nutritional facts that Lipton outlines for the Iced Green Tea with Citrus on their website:

Serving Size: 8 fl oz
Servings per 20 fl oz container: 2.5

Amount Per Serving
Calories 80
Total Fat 0g
Sodium 70mg
Total Carbohydrate 21g
Sugars 21g
Protein 0g

If there are 21g of sugar in one serving size of 8 fl oz and one bottle is 2.5 serving sizes… that means for every bottle of Iced Green Tea with Citrus I drink, I am drinking about 53g of sugar! My God, no wonder I have been noticing a slight weight gain recently1.

I am most definitely bringing a water bottle to work now. I can always treat myself to bottled sugary drinks in the future, but I am not going to drink them regularly anymore. So long, Lipton Iced Green Tea with Citrus!

  1. Of course, I’m not saying that any possible weight gain is directly caused by Lipton iced tea. But hey, it could be a factor. []
