4/20 Is Stupid
April 20th, 2010 | Categories: Life | 11 CommentsSmoking is something that has absolutely never interested me, unlike some other aspects of college life. There are a multitude of reasons why, but in the end, it all amounts to this: it’s just something I choose not to do. It doesn’t matter to me whether others do it, but it’s not something I personally am interested in. Needless to say, the “holiday” that is 4/20 is something I find stupid, but since it’s all part of a counterculture I’m not a part of, I do my best to refrain from judging and go about my own business the way I would any other day.
However, when those who “observe” 4/20 start smoking in the godforsaken early hours of the morning and set off the fire alarm at 8:27a.m., I will totally hardcore judge. I don’t care if they smoke; they can do what they want. But when they are stupid enough to smoke in the dorms and set off the fire alarm and the sprinklers on the floor, then they are dumbasses, regardless of whether or not today is 4/20. When the sprinklers are involved, it’s not even about how the fire alarm disturbed the sleep of so many students anymore. It’s about damaged property that the school won’t cover unless a specific type of insurance has already been purchased prior to the incident.
Also, I just got an email from the District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority telling me not to use tap water until further notice because of an unsafe spike in the amount of chlorine in the water. According to the email, “water with excess chlorine may have… taste and odor problems… the chlorine may also cause a reaction in individuals with sensitive skin.” I washed my face and brushed my teeth with tap water this morning, does this mean my face and/or the inside of my mouth is going to react from the chlorine?

Hi, I'm Manda. I'm a college student studying communications and languages. I like to read, shop, bake, and travel. I have a tendency to listen to my favorite songs on repeat for hours on end. Sometimes I catch myself thinking in a language other than English. 
Everyone I’m friends with basically has the same viewpoint that I do: smoking weed is stupid. You are ruining your own life, while most likely affecting (negatively) that of those around you.
A huge argument blew up on facebook today, where a person started saying how weed has no bad effects and helps people enjoy their life. I was happy to see that almost everyone ganged up on this person (and not in a judgmental way – this person was being completely rude and offensive and disgusting). The whole ‘don’t be judgmental’ thing only works to a certain point. My school bathrooms smell disgusting because of people that think it’s okay to smoke in them. It’s not. It’s illegal and revolting, and you are making the school GROSS.
I am sorry some idiot set off the alarm and sprinklers and messed up your day. I hope you don’t get a bad reaction to the chlorine, especially since none of it is your fault.

WORD. I don’t care what people do in their free time, but it used to piss me off so much when they’d stink up the dorm hallways with pot. And the smell doesn’t go away for DAYS.
This one kid on my floor smoked the other day and the entire hallway REEKED. It was gross. Oh, and did I mention that he lives right next to the RA? Genius right there!
I use to “celebrate” 4/20 when I was in school but I’m glad I got over that phase in life.
It’s just disgusting. I agree that it is so absolutely silly to celebrate such a silly thing.
I’d never even heard of 4/20 just now, but it made me realised I’d forgotten about my dad’s birthday. OH FUCK.
Uhhh… why the hell do people smoke pot in dorms though? Doesn’t the smell totally give them away, and get them in a loooad of trouble? Not to mention the fire alarms… that’s beyond the stupidity of smoking in the first place, its just outright retarded!
Eek, I’m pretty sure it’s illegal to smoke in an enclosed semi public place in Australia (or at least my state)! Tho I wonder if they realized how they’re smoking ‘party’ would be ruined once they set the alarms off? Or maybe that was part of the fun, hrmm!
And chlorine. Urgh, it makes my skin itch every time I go swimming :(
I’ve never heard of this ‘holiday’ before either (is it an American thing?), but I’m 100% with you on this. I personally don’t care what others choose to do. If they want to smoke/drink/being gigantic whorebags, that’s fine with me. I personally have no interest in any of those things, so I don’t do them. But I don’t just anyone who does. But I do get rageful when those activities interfere with my way of life. Stinking up the dorms from smoking pot = LOSE. Doing stupid stuff and blaming it on “But I was waaaasted” = LOSE.
So I 100% feel ya hear.

It probably is an American thing. I’d never heard of it when I lived overseas. (Granted, I was also younger then :P) According to the Wiki article, the whole term/holiday was coined by a group of high school students in California.
Ugh I know where you’re coming from! I had a hard time adjusting when I first came to university because the smell of weed literally made me sick. People would smoke it around me and it would make me vomit!
Such a disgusting habit.
