Chivalry is Dead
May 7th, 2010 | Categories: Travel | 4 CommentsAmount of suitcases I had at the airport yesterday: 3
Amount the suitcases weighed: 20 (carry-on), 65 and 70 pounds, respectively
Amount of strength my body possesses: Approximately zero
Amount of times I visibly struggled in unloading/loading these suitcases from my taxi, the check-in counter, the baggage claim and finally my car: 8
Amount of times people stared at me (most likely in amusement I presume) as I struggled: 4
Amount of times anyone offered to help whilst staring at me: 0
Good God, it’s not like I want some man to come rushing to my rescue or be a damsel in distress 24/7 just to get some assistance, but is it really too much to ask for some assistance from the people that are obviously staring (so, they know there is a problem cause I’m visibly struggling) at me as I wrestle with gigantic suitcases that collectively are heavier than I weigh?

I almost fainted in shock the time a guy approached me and asked if he could help me with my suitcase. It seems very much a case that people will stare because they want to see if someone’s going to help – and forget that they could be that person. Of course some are just rude, but the first instance accounts for quite a number.
One lady I met at the check-in counter was actually on the same flight as me. Therefore, she stared at me as I checked in, as I boarded my flight and as I waited at the baggage claim. It got to the point where I openly stared back at her because I was fed up with her “observing” me as though I were in a fish bowl!
that happens to me consistently! i especially love when i’m struggling to get through a non-automatic door, and the door keeps pinning my suitcase in it, or at times, me, and no one will offer to hold it whatsoever.
i actually have a list of ‘rude airports’ hahah.. i guess i’m just that kind of traveller!
I actually am a fan of both airports I was flying through as I use them regularly. Usually the airport employees are quite nice, but I guess the majority of the people I was traveling alongside were stuffy businessmen who didn’t want to wrinkle their suits in an effort to help me. *shrugs*
