Selling on eBay
May 11th, 2010 | Categories: Online | 4 CommentsI’m starting to make preparations for the next two to three years of my life. Next year, I will be spending an entire year abroad in Beijing. The year after that, I plan on permanently moving out to Washington, DC (where I go to school) because I anticipate remaining in the DC area after I graduate from college. Needless to say, I’ve got a lot of moving planned in my life, which is where selling on eBay comes in.
I’ve always been a pack rat when it comes to books and CDs, and to a lesser extent DVDs. All of my books, CDs and DVDs are in good condition, but I can’t afford to haul my collections around the country and/or globe. I have tentative plans to sell them on eBay or half.com, but I’ve never used either site before. I know people in the same “blogging circle” as I have used eBay and/or half.com to sell various items (Amanda, Haley and Caity if I’m not mistaken, as well as others) so I was hoping that I could get some insight from those who have used these websites either to sell or purchase items. Tips, advice, horror stories… I want the lot. Help a girl out, please?

I have no experience what-so-ever with eBay, so I unfortunately can’t help you out there. But I am interested in parring down my CD/DVD/book collection and have considered trying out eBay. So I’ll stalk this post to see what others say. :)
Clear photos, full descriptions, honesty in describing quality of the item. Charge a dollar more on shipping than it actually costs, so you can cover some of the eBay listing fees (which can be exhorbitant!).
There’s not much more advice I can give you – I imagine eBay Australia is quite different from eBay US in terms of demographics and demand. The best way to get used to it is via trial and error – you’ll soon learn what type of items sell, which don’t, etc.
Seconding what Amanda said. I’ve successfully sold DVDs (predominantly television series; movies don’t really sell successfully) and books on eBay (Australia). I make sure to include a full description and be honest (which gives you a good “reputation”). I’ve found that if something is still in very good condition, it can sell for not too much lower than RRP, especially if few people are selling said product.
