What I’ve Learned From the 2010 World Cup

Seeing as today is the 2010 World Cup final (GO NETHERLANDS!), here is a hodge-podge of what I’ve learned about soccer/fútbol and the World Cup in general from the 2010 World Cup.

  • Soccer/fútbol players must moonlight as actors, because I’ve never seen such childish, petulant drama on a sports arena. (Granted, I don’t watch a lot of sports.)
  • Speaking of drama, the French national team… a theater troupe of actors if there ever was one!
  • Vuvuzelas annoy everyone except South Africans, apparently.
  • FIFA referee calls are controversial at best, downright awful at worst.

My Brazilian soccer/fútbol player name is… MANDERTO!

This pie chart sums up the rest of my lessons from the World Cup, courtesy of Cracked:

And now, all talk of soccer will go quiet on the U.S. front until the World Cup in 2014!

Woo! I can’t believe you’re on the orange side, too! :D

    HUP HOLLAND HUP :D

    • Manda says:

Well, after the US got knocked out I started backing Germany. Since Spain knocked Germany out, I’m going for the Oranje in the final :D

  2. Emsz says:

    GO HOLLAND! ;)

  3. Meg says:

I watched maybe 5 minutes of the World Cup total and have no idea what went on, but ¡VIVA ESPAÑA! and I really want a vuvuzela :P

I’d say there’s quite a bit of acting in the football world, both literally (they get cast in films every now and then) and for the magazines. Performing for the camera gets your name out there, though it’s slowly moving towards having a wife who loves the camera is what will make you more famous.

That pie chart is so accurate. :D I do think passing the ball requires a lot of skills, though. Spain did it beautifully so I am happy that they won.

Have you heard of the term “diving”? I love using it to refer to all the acting. It’s called the same thing in Chinese so I kind of feel warmed up to it. :P It’s gotten worse by each year, and to be honest, the US NT is one of the few teams which didn’t do it so much. If they made it any further they could have won the Fair Play award. XD
