Just a Minute (December 2010)

December 31st, 2010 by Manda | 1 Comment | Filed in Life

On the last day of every month, I take Just a Minute to reflect on what I’m currently up to.

Missing… all of my close friends from last semester! Much as I love China and Hong Kong, they both just aren’t the same without them. Places are always a little lonelier when friends leave.

Eating… lots and lots of my favorite Hong Kong foods! It’s been way too long since I’ve been in this city. I think I’ve already eaten my weight in wonton noodles during my time here.

Exploring… Hong Kong. I’m fortuate enough to have had a few friends in town, so I am enjoying meeting up with them and having fun adventures in the city.

Shopping… my heart out. Hong Kong might be more expensive than mainland China, but when the quality is better and the sizes actually fit me, how can I complain about forking over a little extra for awesome clothes?

Playing… with my new Kindle! As much as I love actual books, e-readers are great for traveling.

Scouring… Hong Kong for the best bubble tea stands. Since studying abroad in China, I’ve become addicted to bubble tea and drink the stuff almost once a day. I do have a rule, though; no more than one bubble tea per day.

Celebrating… the arrival of 2011!

Looking Back at 2010

December 29th, 2010 by Manda | 4 Comments | Filed in Life

My travels are officially over. My month of exploring China is up, which is as saddening as it sounds. However, I’ve still got about two weeks of vacation left before I head back to school. Two weeks to enjoy spending time with friends and family in Hong Kong and soaking up every bit of free time I get before going back to another semester of intensive Mandarin Chinese language study in Beijing!

At the end of every year, I have a habit of reflecting on the months passed and whether or not the year treated me well. This is the first night I’ve had some “breather” time in quite a while. As a result, I’ve been thinking about the last year a lot. So much has happened that I can’t believe it all was in the same year! Even though there were some not-so-great events, 2010 was definitely a huge improvement on 2009. In fact, it may have been one of my best years yet.

I fell in love with my communication studies and realized that it was exactly what I wanted to do with my life. I got a scholarship to study abroad for a year in Beijing, China, which has definitely impacted on the decisions I make for my future. I had my first internship, and learned a lot about workplace dynamics as well as my field of study. I lived in an apartment on my own for the first time. I went to Europe over the summer and had the best host family experience I’ve ever had. I learned tons and tons of Mandarin and feel so much more confident about my language abilities. I had new experiences regarding personal relationship dynamics, both of the platonic and romantic variety. I gained a new best friend, and I don’t use that term lightly; I know that real best friends are rare and hard to find.

I’m a little upset at having to say goodbye to 2010 because it was such a fantastic year. I hope even better things will be in store for 2011!

Best of 2010

Just like I did last year, I’ve put together a list of my blog’s “best of” entries from the year 2010. I have listed them in chronological order and have linked entries that I felt were either thought-provoking, interesting to write, or shared something useful with the rest of the world. It’s been an awesome 2010, and here’s to 2011! :D
