Classic English Literature
June 6th, 2011 | Categories: Entertainment, Question of the Week | 4 CommentsI’ve been spending most of my spare time reading on my Kindle while I’ve been on the road. I’ve taken advantage of free public domain books to read some of the classics in English literature in an effort to expand my literary horizons. For years and years I’ve said I’ve wanted to read Dickens, Bronte, etc. Now, I’ve finally gotten off my lazy ass and have started reading them. For someone who once considered an English literature minor, it’s about time I started devouring more of the classics!
These are the ones I’ve read so far this summer:
- The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas
- Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
- A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens
- Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens
- Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Next on my list are Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen, and perhaps some Shakespeare.
Question of the Week: What English classics would you recommend to read?

Jane Eyre is one of my favorites! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. :D
I’m not sure how much Shakespeare you’ve read before, but I would definitely recommend starting with his comedies rather than his tragedies. The language is a lot easier to handle and it’s a great way to get used to it before you dive in to the heavier stuff – I can actually enjoy Hamlet now, which I definitely didn’t when I read it in high school. Imho, Much Ado About Nothing is the very best. :D
I’ve started Jane Eyre and it is much easier than I remember it being (although I think I was 11 last time I tried reading it).
I was in Much Ado About Nothing, actually. One of my high school graduation requirements was to be in a play, so I was in Much Ado. I was the messenger at the very beginning of the show. Needless to say, I don’t remember what happens in the play aside from what goes on in the first scene! :P
Hope you enjoy Jane Eyre and S&S (my favourite Austen novel I’ve read thus far).
