I Need to Invest in Rain Gear
August 14th, 2011 | Categories: Life | 6 CommentsThis morning was the third time I’ve been caught in a torrential downpour without an umbrella or any form of rain protection whatsoever in the last two weeks. This leads me to believe I either need to live in a place that is not prone to torrential downpours (unlikely to happen) or invest in an umbrella (much more likely to happen).
Seriously though, who else has this kind of luck? At least the first time I was running in the streets with the boy (which made me feel like I was in The Notebook). But the last two times I’ve been caught in the rain on my walk home. I guess I should consider it lucky that I was only going home and not leaving home because then it didn’t really matter if I got soaked to the bone, but still. It’s kind of depressing to have the heavens open on you as you’re trudging home.
Thing is, I don’t like umbrellas. Actually, I hate them. When it gets really rainy, more often than not it’s incredibly windy, and then an umbrella is pretty much useless because the raindrops are flinging at you in all directions and it’s just a hot mess. A rain jacket is much more practical, but far more expensive.
…basically, I just need to be more prepared for rain. Gotta go shopping for a rain jacket, rain boots, and possibly even an umbrella. It rained so rarely in Beijing that I’m really not used to how prone DC is to rainy weather!

Not sure where your “permanent residence” is, but random downpours happen all the time on the east coast in the summer. Depending on how long you’ll be in DC, you may want to get a small umbrella that’ll easily fit inside a purse or backpack. The downpours slow down once fall starts. And it’ll probably rain/snow a bit in winter and lots more in spring.
Oh man, I got caught so badly last night. Such torrential downpouring! I was so soaked that my dress still hadn’t dried this morning. Which was fine since it was still raining and will continue to rain for the next two days. I too hate umbrellas though, so maybe I will have to invest in a raincoat… maybe.
I’m hitting up a mall tomorrow and I’m definitely going to take a look at raincoats when I’m there. They’re just so much more stylish than umbrellas!
When I lived abroad it was rainy season in Costa Rica, so I went through more umbrellas than I thought I could ever imagine. I was too poor and lazy to buy a nice rain jacket, and instead of ruining all my closed-toed shoes I also basically wore flip flops all the time and let the mud collect on my feet, lol. Now that I’m back in Chicago, I don’t even bother. I just walk around in the rain most of the time :)
I highly recommend the raincoat though…definitely wish I’d bought one before studying abroad.
Oh Manda, how can you live on the east coast without appropriate rain gear? :P Though this is coming from me who doesn’t own rain appropriate foot wear. Not good. I swear, it was freakin’ monsoon season here a few weeks ago and all I had was flats or flip flops. So I wore flip flops. Fortunately it’s warm enough in Oz for that. Back home in Halifax, not an option. Cute rain boots are hard to find though. I heart my raincoat though. It looks just like a regular beige trench coat, except that it’s water proof. Win! I’d like a nice umbrella though. I have one that folds up into my purse (carry it with me everywhere just in case), but in windy situations, like you said, kind of rendered pointless since it’s flipping inside and out.
My mom, in all seriousness, told me to wear a rain poncho once. You know, those kind that look like giant garbage bags? Um, no, mom. Just no. I’d rather be wet than look like a middle-aged tourist, thankyouverymuch. :P
I wore a poncho once when I was at the Chinese-Vietnam border seeing the Detian waterfall. The only reason why I justified wearing it was because they didn’t sell umbrellas in the area. Also, not only was it raining, but there was misty spray stuff from the waterfall, so there was moisture/water in all directions. I ended up getting pretty soaked anyway, despite the poncho :P
