Black Pants, I Has Them

September 18th, 2011 | Categories: Style | 7 Comments

I work in a career advising office and I’m an intern at a prominent non-profit organization. So how is it, exactly, that I’ve managed to live this life without owning a pair of black pants?

I realized this problem when I was getting dressed for work last week. There was a cold snap at the end of the week, which meant I had to trade in my pencil skirt for a pair of pants. While I do have “dress pants” (khakis and a pair of dark brown pinstripes), I don’t have plain, regular black pants. Like, seriously? I’m trained to give conduct a workshop that has a component which talks about appropriate clothing for work and I didn’t have a pair of black pants?

Thank God the business clothing section at H&M is all I can say. I hit it up yesterday and I now have a nice pair of black pants and a fitted black blazer to boot. All I need are a pair of work-appropriate heels (I’m the queen of flats when it comes to work, but I think heels give more of a professional look) and I will actually look the part of my professional roles!

(The fact that I’ve managed to create an entire entry about my lack of black pants shows you just how exciting my life has been lately. Not that I’m not enjoying life at the moment, per se; it’s just that there hasn’t been many eventful things worth sharing on this blog.)

Black pants is one of those things that most of us probably would never buy unless we needed them. For me, it was band concerts in high school that did it. Still useful to this day for the 3-4 times a year I wear them.

I left my black pants at a dry cleaners in NYC when I left for Abu Dhabi and I am absurdly angry about it. I only have grey dress pants at the moment (and dresses) and my wardrobe is insanely limited by that fact! Must. get. black. dress. pants.

I must do the same, I use to have loads of clothes when I worked in an office but after being at uni for the past three years I have lived in my jeans, I will def check out h&m though :)

I only realised I didn’t own any that I fit (my last pair was for stage band bought at age 14… didn’t have hips back then, ha!) when I was starting at my new job too! Had to borrow mum’s. They fit so well that I can’t be bothered buying any. But congrats on entering the world of dressing professionally, haha.

Haha I recently had to buy a pair of black pants when I started my new job, too. It just isn’t my thing.

Black pants are my greatest enemy. I used to need them for band throughout high school, and later my hotel jobs. But they are evil. I hate them. They’re all so unflattering on my body shape. Fortunately, I haven’t had a need for them in a few years now. And I will not buy any ever again until forced. Skirts all the way.

Goodness I could not find a pair of black dress pants that fit me here in the US, so for 4 years in the business school, I’ve been wear loose (borderline saggy) black pants. I had to go back to Taiwan and buy ones that actually fit this summer. I figured I should upgrade my saggy pants for fitted ones for grad school :/
