Snow Over the Years

snow

In light of today’s first snow of the season:

Age 3, Hong Kong: Is snow real like Barney says it is?

Age 7, Delaware: SNOW! SNOWMEN! SNOW ANGELS! SNOW FIGHTS! SNOW DAYS!

Age 13, Australia: Yes, I have seen snow before. Yes, it is possible to build a snowman. I have built some in my day.

Age 16, Chicago: Snow in the winter isn’t a bad thing I guess. It’s infinitely better than it being too cold to snow.

Age 20, Beijing: Is it snowing because it’s meant to snow, or did the government seed the clouds for some much-needed moisture?

Age 22, Washington, DC: If my bus can’t be on schedule during a normal day, this snow better not make me drastically late for work.

Comments

  1. I’ve moved a lot too–it’s so funny how drastically my thoughts on snow changed with age and place!

  2. Girl Meets Debt Age 29, Vancouver, BC: Snow is nice around the holidays. Not so nice after Dec. 26th. And anything that delays my already long commute is NOT NICE!. But I really do like playing in snow ;)

    • If DC could handle snow better I don’t think I would hate it as much. This city freaks out if we get even a slight dusting! Having lived in Chicago for several winters, I can’t decide if that’s amusing or pathetic :P

  3. Ha, my reactions over the years are nowhere near as changing as yours. I liked it when I was a kid, but as I grew older Toronto got less and less snow due to the phenomenon that is global warming. I remember when I was 15 struggling through an uncharacteristically high amount of it on my way home from school. My boots were leaking (of course), and my toes were freezing. Every step was such an effort. I resisted crying because I didn’t want the tears to get frozen to my face. Then of course I moved to a place where we regularly have days that are -20C or colder and where if you’re out for more than five minutes death doesn’t seem too far off… (I may be a TAD dramatic.)

I do laugh when I see cities shutting down over a dusting… I know it makes sense, but considering the fact that in 18 years in Toronto I only ever had one snow day, I think it’s hilarious that my cousins in Kentucky have, like, 12 a year, for an inch of snow.

    • Strangely enough the coldest wind I’ve ever felt was in Beijing, and not Chicago. That was most likely because in Beijing, the winds come bearing down from Siberia, which is as bitterly cold as it sounds. I guess it also has to do with the fact that I drove everywhere in Chicago whereas in Beijing I walked or relied on public transportation, even in the dead of winter. But it was in Chicago that I felt my coldest temperatures… -30F during one particularly bad storm, if I remember correctly! My brother and I looked it up and discovered that it was warmer in places like Moscow and Helsinki that day than in Chicago!

What I don’t get about DC is that it’s not like it NEVER snows here. It usually does *at least* several times in the winter. But each time it snows, it’s like the end of the world. I get the hysteria in places where it never snows (eg Florida or SoCal) but for DC, it’s a little unnecessary.

  4. Hahaha so legitimate. As a kid, snow meant going outside in snow pants at recess. But I had just moved to my town and I was 6 and a half and my parents and I didn’t really know the difference between snow pants and regular warm pants for a while. Then, when we did know, I think I forgot them? So I used to make paper snowflakes inside. I still didn’t really love snow, but I loved ice. Icicles, ice skating, etc. We also had some nice low bushes in my yard that, when it snowed, turn into a snow house. It was a wonderful time. Looking back now, snow was magical when I was a kid and so was my yard. No I’m like “boo snow, I don’t wanna warm my car”.

    • I remember thinking snow was magical when I was a kid, too. I thought it was the greatest thing ever and always hoped for a snow day because that meant I could play in the snow all day. Alas, snow definitely does not have that allure for me anymore. I do think the world looks pretty in a fresh blanket of snow, but that only lasts for about an hour. Slushy gray stuff and/or ice does not do it for me.

  5. Haha, this is both cute and funny. :p I don’t recall my perception of snow, though. p:
