The Pedometer Challenge

In light of Valentine’s Day, my office decided to host a friendly challenge for the health of our hearts: a pedometer challenge! Between February 15 and 28, we’re going to record how many steps we take and log our numbers in a chart circulating amongst the office. At the end of the month, the person with the most steps wins!

Pedometer Challenge

It’s strictly a friendly (and optional) competition, but it’s been really neat to see how into the idea of a pedometer challenge my office is. Everyone was wearing theirs yesterday, and throughout the day we’d be swapping our step numbers to see where everyone was at. (It helps that most of us are competitive by nature.) Personally, I know I get too lazy for my own good, so this challenge is good motivation for me to get my butt off the couch and start moving. Now that the weather is gradually starting to warm up, I’m planning on walking to and from work instead of taking the bus. Not only is that better for me and will help me log more steps in this challenge, but it’ll also allow me to avoid the awfulness of DC’s public transportation systems, so it’s a triple win!

  1. I tried this Pedometer challenge for an afternoon. It was hard! But it really forced me to stop sitting down so much. I was actually up and about playing with my sister’s dog more though, which Bella (the pug) loved.

Go forth and enjoy the great outdoors with your pedometer!

  2. hey amanda, that’s a great pedometer..i researched them and have this one. shoot for 10,000 steps a day. certainly helps if you walk (like around an indoor track) for 40-45 minutes a day – that will most certainly boost the steps…like by 4,000+ steps. :-)

  3. I used to have one to help encourage me to work out more… But it broke. :(
Using stairs instead of elevators and escalators helps your pedometre progress too!

  4. This sounds like a great idea from your office! I wish the office I worked at did something like that while I was there. :P We definitely needed it. 8 hours of working and I usually get up only 3-4 times for maybe 2mins. Pretty bad!

Hope you win ;) and get to enjoy the great fresh air! Definitely a win.

  5. Love this idea! i’ve been doing a “healthy” feb month and I’m totally want to do this!!

  6. That’s pretty cool. :) My senior year of HS, the teachers in A building had all gotten into teams (Maths, English, Social Studies) and competed to have the most steps. Then, it was broken down into the departments by person. It was interesting, and they seemed to have a lot of fun with it.

I hope you have fun with it! It’s quite a creative way to do things, and if you get to keep the pedometer, that’s a plus! :) For me, pedometers always encouraged me to keep up with having steps and moving about. If I remember correctly, 10,000 steps is approximately 5 miles. When I was in elementary school, that was supposedly what we needed to aim for per day.

    Good luck. :)

  7. What a great idea! And such a good motivator too. I should talk my work place into doing something like this. :)

    Good luck to you!!

  8. oh, jeez. i felt the competition building up in me just reading this post, ha! i feel like i would be the one to go crazy with this and walk around the office with laptop in hand. sounds like a lot of fun! good luck. :)
