About
About Me
Hi, I’m Manda. I am a college student studying communications and languages. I’m many contradictory things, but some words to describe me are opinionated, emotional, cynical, loyal, and ambitious. I have a tendency to talk really fast and to intersperse French, Mandarin, and Cantonese words into my English vocabulary thanks to years of various language study.
I can usually be found in front of a book/TV/computer, shopping, in class, or working one of my various jobs. When I want something, I really go for it, and I am nothing if not dedicated to my schoolwork and work responsibilities. I don’t really see the point in following something through if I know it won’t last, but education and income/experience are always valuable commodities so I spend more time at school/work than anywhere else.
I am part of a three-person family and I have friends from all over the world, thanks to my multicultural and multinational background. While it’s not always easy to have my closest friends live far away, I wouldn’t change it for anything. I also have a perpetually complicated romantic life. Perhaps the two are related.
I travel around the world as much as I possibly can and when I’m not traveling in a far-flung land, I’m fantasizing about my next location. Currently, I am studying (full-time), working (part-time), and interning (part-time) in Washington, D.C.

About the Site
This blog is a personal blog where I talk incessantly about anything and everything that interests me. It also serves as a writing outlet. It’s a place for me to write about my opinions, talk about fascinating things I find/encounter, showcase some photography, discuss and critique things and so on and so forth. This isn’t a blog where you will read long, tedious accounts of what type of cereal I had for breakfast or what question I got wrong on my math test. If I’m not interested in reading about what happened in my own day, how can I expect anyone else to be interested?
Featured
Listed in reverse chronological order.
- I wrote a guest entry about Kurt Halsey’s artwork at Shimmer Like Gold (June 2010)
- Break the Sky was nominated in the 2010 Bloggies in the “Best Teen Weblog” category (January 2010).
- Alice interviewed me (May 2009).
The Name
I got the name “Break the Sky” from the song by The Hush Sound of the same name.
Before the world dies at my door
I’ll break the sky, for you and I are going nowhere.
Kiss goodbye, a dozen times before we get there.
Why do I need anyone else, when I can break the sky myself?
