Here’s The Thing With Money, Friends, and Travel

This past weekend, three friends and I went to Taishan (泰山), the holiest mountain of the Five Sacred Mountains in China. It was a standard budget weekend trip in China what with taking trains, staying in cheap hostels, eating street food, etc. The mountain was great and all (the climb not so much, but no one ever said climbing a mountain was easy) but the main thing I am taking away from “Taishan weekend” is that money, friends, and travel don’t necessarily mixed well. Especially when you are traveling abroad and there are extremely mixed levels of language ability.

I went with three other friends to Taishan. Two of them speak extremely limited Chinese, the other speaks just as well as I do. Not surprisingly, it was my one friend and I who did most of our communicating and navigating and guiding for the weekend in our various travels and excursions up, down, and around Taishan. And also not surprisingly, it was also my friend and I who foot the bill for about 85% of our expenses during the trip.

We are all poor students. It’s not like we traveled extravagantly during our time in Taishan. We took trains instead of planes, public transport instead of taxis, hostels instead of hotels, street food instead of restaurants. But still, those costs add up. And when the bill for four is split between two people, traveling becomes even more expensive. And it becomes even more expensive when the thought of paying back each share of the bill seems to conveniently slip people’s minds.

Is it really that much to ask for people to pay their own way when traveling? And to remember to pay back people who covered for them when they had no cash? And, when the question of repayment comes up, to actually pay back someone rather than just saying you will?

It is all just very frustrating. Money is such an awkward subject.

Tidbits

I have a little less than a week left of vacation before my spring semester starts and I’m quite enjoying all this free time on my hands. I’ve gotten very accustomed to sleeping in and moving at a nice, leisurely pace – all of which I am savoring because I will not be able to enjoy these luxuries when I return to Beijing!

I’ve been reading a ton, most of which I can attribute to my Kindle and free time. I’ve also debated taking up writing again, although I don’t have any of my working drafts (“working” is used loosely here; I haven’t written anything creatively since the summer of 2009) on hand. One of my friends gave me an idea about a book I could write, though. (Rather, he looked at me point-blank and said, “You should write a book and this is what it will be about. Then, when it’s complete, I get the first copy to read.” While I was taken aback by this as we hadn’t been talking about books or writing, such directness was refreshing.) I’ve been toying with starting that up with some kind of short story or prologue that I could use in the future to expand upon, but I’m hesitant to start writing anything because I won’t have time to even think about writing once the semester starts. Reading and writing tie in quite nicely with the resolutions I’ve made for 2011, though, so I’m pleased with that.

Speaking of resolutions, I’ve added on two more. One is to keep an account of my finances, because it’s about time I keep track of my cash flow (particularly as in China, everything is handled in cash, not plastic). It doesn’t matter how cheap things are in China or Hong Kong; I still need to know what I’m spending my money on! Like the pair of knockoff Uggs I got for $99HKD yesterday. Not a lot of money in the grand scheme of things (particularly when you compare that price to a pair of real Uggs), but it’s still money nonetheless.

The other is to maintain a daily happiness journal, inspired by Krissy. I’ve set up a Tumblr for this project, which can be found here: 每天开心 (Mei Tian Kai Xin). The name translates to “every day happy,” which I think is very fitting. Everyone needs a little bit of happiness each day.

My new Tumblr project hasn’t been the only thing I’ve been busy with online. I’ve been trying to figure out why my WP to Twitter plugin doesn’t work as it should. Every time I publish a post, it only tweets the title of my entry, not the title and URL. Anyone have a plugin to recommend that actually works? Or one that won’t start working and then randomly stop including the URL in tweets, as this plugin did?

Oh, and in celebration of this blog’s 2nd birthday, I’ve put up a new layout.

Today’s Budget: 36RMB

November 7th, 2010 by Manda | 1 Comment | Filed in Food

I woke up this morning to find that, in some marvelous stroke of stupidity, I had left my wallet at my friend’s place last night. The simplest thing to do would be to either borrow money from my roommate today until I get my wallet back, or to head over to my friend’s place and retrieve it. However, my roommate is out of town for the weekend and my friend is out and about for the majority of today. I won’t be able to get my wallet back until at least the evening.

I have exactly 36RMB (equivalent of a little over 6USD) on hand, which is basically what I hadn’t spent last night on drinks and taxis. If I want to stretch 36RMB to my two meals today, these are the options I have:

  • Jiaozi (饺子) (6-7RMB)
  • Baozi (包子) (4RMB)
  • Jianbing (煎饼 ) (4RMB)
  • Bubble tea (6RMB – 12RMB)
  • Yogurt (4.50RMB) and a croissant (3.80RMB)

Not gonna lie, I was a little panicked when I realized that I didn’t have my wallet on hand, which has both cash and my ATM card. But now it seems totally feasible that 36RMB can feed me for a day. I just can’t eat anything super fancy… which, after last night, is more than fine with me. Oily, greasy Chinese food sounds wonderful right now!
